What is a positive mindset? Why is it important?

A positive mindset means that you look on the bright side of life, focus on all that is good in your life and others’, and make an effort to see things from a positive perspective. Having a positive mindset doesn’t mean you’re always smiling and happy; it means that you make an effort to focus on the good things in life even when times are tough or when you’re facing obstacles.

A positive Mindset or attitude can be defined as; “Positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on the bright side of life and expects positive results. It means approaching life’s challenges with a positive outlook. It does not necessarily mean avoiding or ignoring the bad things; instead, it involves making the most of the potentially bad situations, trying to see the best in other people, and viewing yourself and your abilities positively.”

There are many traits and characteristics associated with a positive mindset, including:

  • Optimism – a willingness to try and take a chance instead of assuming your efforts won’t pay off.
  • Acceptance – acknowledging that things don’t always turn out how you want them to but learning from your mistakes.
  • Resilience – bouncing back from adversity, disappointment, and failure instead of giving up.
  • Gratitude – actively, continuously appreciating the good things in your life.
  • Consciousness/Mindfulness – dedicating the mind to conscious awareness and enhancing the ability to focus.
  • Integrity – the trait of being honorable, righteous, and straightforward, instead of deceitful and self-serving.

Positive thinking is not only characterized by these qualities, but also leads to them. By actively adopting positive thinking in your life, you can develop and maintain a positive mindset.

The Importance of Building a Positive Mindset

Developing a positive attitude and gaining the benefits associated with such an outlook is the result of cultivating certain thoughts. Cultivating these thoughts does not mean that you must be happy or cheerful all the time; it means accepting both negative and positive aspects of life. It also means acknowledging that you will not always feel good and learning to accept bad moods and difficult emotions when they come. Above all, it means increasing your control over your own attitude in the face of whatever comes your way.

It is important to recognize that the way you think and feel impacts the way you engage with the world. When you choose to give in to negative thinking and pessimism, you are not only giving up control, you are missing out on an opportunity for growth and development. While negative emotions and thinking have their place; they allow you to sharpen your focus on dangers, threats and vulnerabilities. This is vital for survival. While positive thinking and positive emotions broaden and build our resources and skills and opens us up to possibilities. It’s ok to feel down or think pessimistically sometimes, but choosing optimism will benefit you far more in the long run.

If you want to be optimistic, you have to change your beliefs about yourself and the situation you are facing. You must believe that things will turn out well, and when they do, then your outlook becomes more positive.
